Whether it’s a comedy or a drama, we remember our favorite shows with affection. The top TV shows that we grew up with are never forgotten. The same classic programs tend to pop up on every viewers poll. They also tend to be innovative shows that produce many imitations. For the ones that are long gone, we can re-live the memories on DVD and repeats.
One of the earliest hits was the I Love Lucy show that ran from 1951 - 1961. Lucille Ball was the screwball girl next door that everyone loved. She starred in the show with her then husband Desi Arnaz as the Ricardo’s. The story revolved around the antics of Lucille who wanted to be more than a housewife and would plot to join the band, led by her Cuban bandleader husband. The show was syndicated across the world and still plays every day in one country or another. Lucille Ball has been cited as the inspiration for subsequent generations of female comics and top TV shows followed its sitcom format.
A program about a medical unit in the Korean War doesn’t promise a lot of laughs but MASH provided them from 1972 - 1983. The series was based on the movie and the characters became household names. Alan Alda starred as Hawkeye, the wisecracking surgeon who copes with the wounded soldiers that he has to patch up by using humor. It was one of the first shows to combine tragedy and comedy.
In the world of science fiction, no franchise has been more successful than Star Trek. The original series was broadcast from 1966 and lasted three seasons. The later spin offs that followed are also some of the top TV shows and the series still has a cult following today. The first series introduced us to the iconic figures of Captain Kirk, played by William Shatner and Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy. It was broadcast before the first moon landing and audiences were hungry for intelligent science fiction stories.
An earlier science fiction and fantasy show had paved the way for Star Trek and others. The Twilight Zone ran from 1959 - 1965, enthralling viewers with off the wall plots and surprise twists. The reason that it is one of the top TV shows is the high standard of the scripts, written by many respected writers of the day. The show was revived in 1985 and again, in 2002. Director Steven Spielberg was also a fan, considering it to be one of the top TV shows from his youth, and he produced a movie version starring Dan Aykroyd and Vic Morrow.
